Hey folks, Martin appears to be busy. They’re releasing a limited edition of the D-18 1955 CFM IV – MSRP $4699. I remember trying some Martins about two years ago at the Guitar Center in Arlington Heights near Chicago. They were very likeable but the cheaper ones ~$450-900 were Mexican made. I took a Parkwood PW-510 instead at 60% off at $599. I will pick up a Martin one day though, when I can afford one.
If you’re wondering what kind of acoustic you’re getting for $4699 note that Elvis played a 1942 D-18 in his early years (hear one on the classic “That’s Alright Mama” even though the quality of the recording remains to be desired) as did Hank Williams (he sometimes alternated with a D-28). The D-18 1955 is constructed with mahogany blocks/dovetail neck joint. The body sie is D-14 fret and the top is solid sitka spruce. The rosette is the old style 18. Also available left-handed at no extra charge. Promises to be a beauty. Definitely for the pros out there.
Now more for the entry level (by Martin standards) is the 15 Series: 00-15M which retails for $1499. Made of mortise/tenon neck joint, the size is 00-14 fret, and the top is solid genuine mahogany. Again, left handed model available no extra charge.
